Yarn ball or cake: understanding these two forms

Yarn ball or cake: discover the differences, how to choose the strand to pull, and why having your yarn wound can make life easier.

Yarn ball or cake: both forms let you knit straight away, but they do not unwind in quite the same way. Here is how to tell them apart and choose the one that suits you.

After choosing a yarn, one practical question sometimes remains: should you receive it as a skein, a ball or a cake? Balls and cakes are already wound and ready to use. The main difference is their shape and the way the yarn unwinds.

What is a yarn ball?

A yarn ball is yarn wound into a round shape. Depending on how it was wound, the yarn can unwind from the outside or from the centre by gently pulling the inner strand. A centre pull often helps the ball stay in place while you knit.

The round shape is compact and easy to store. To keep it from rolling away or unwinding in your bag, place it in a yarn bowl or a small project bag.

And what is a yarn cake?

A cake is a cylindrical ball of yarn with two flat sides, made with a yarn winder. The yarn is wound around a central core and can usually be pulled from the centre or the outside. A cake sits flat and rolls less easily than a ball.

This shape also shows off the yarn’s shades: the successive layers reveal colour transitions and any changes in tone. It is especially beautiful with hand-dyed yarn.

Which end should you start with?

If the yarn is wound into a cake or ball, find the strand that unwinds most easily and pull it gently. When starting from the centre, keep one hand under the ball to guide the yarn and prevent a clump from coming out all at once.

Prefer knitting from the outside? That works perfectly well too. Place the ball in a yarn bowl or project bag so it does not roll across the floor. Whichever end you choose, do not pull sharply: relaxed yarn unwinds more smoothly and tangles less.

Why choose cake winding?

A skein must be opened out and wound before you can start knitting. Winding turns the large loops into a ready-to-use cake, so you do not need a swift or yarn winder at home.

On some product pages, the “In a cake/ball” option means that we prepare the yarn before shipping it. Any surcharge is shown on the product page and calculated per item. If you already have the necessary equipment and would rather prepare your skeins yourself, you can keep the “No” option.

In short, balls and cakes are two practical ways of presenting yarn that has already been wound. A ball is round, while a cake sits flat and displays the colours beautifully. Choose whichever form feels most comfortable, then let the yarn unwind freely as your project grows.
